The Business Case for Esports Investment in Africa

A different starting point

Esports investment conversations often start from a console and PC gaming template built for markets where that infrastructure is already widespread. That template doesn't transfer cleanly to most African markets, where gaming growth has been driven overwhelmingly by mobile — a function of smartphone penetration far outpacing console ownership, and mobile titles requiring a fraction of the connectivity and hardware investment that PC or console esports demand.

What that means for strategy

Brands and publishers that succeed here tend to build around mobile-first competitive titles and community structures rather than importing a PC/console tournament format wholesale. A few principles we advise on consistently:

  • Design around connectivity realities. Tournament and event formats need to account for variable mobile data costs and connectivity, not assume broadband-grade infrastructure.
  • Treat streamers and community organizers as infrastructure, not just marketing. In markets without a dense existing esports venue and league infrastructure, individual streamers and community tournament organizers often are the infrastructure a brand needs to partner with.
  • Build tournament formats that scale down as well as up — regional qualifiers and community-level competition matter as much as a flagship continental final, and often matter more for building a durable player base.
  • Think in ecosystem terms, not single-sponsorship terms. A one-off tournament sponsorship generates a moment of visibility; a sustained investment in publisher partnerships, streamer relationships, and community events builds a durable presence.

The advisory takeaway

The business case for esports investment in Africa is strong, but it's a different business case than the one built for mature console/PC esports markets. Brands and publishers that design for the market that actually exists — mobile-first, community-driven, connectivity-constrained — build a more durable position than those importing a format that was never built for these conditions.
